• Fat Transfer to the Face

General

As people age, our skin begins to lose its strength and our face develops a thin appearance that makes it look like its sagging. Most people are not aware that they already possess a very effective solution to counter this in their body.

The fat that is available in our body functions as the perfect material to replenish facial features. The enormous deposits of fat in undesirable areas can be extracted and implanted into other areas to refill and rejuvenate thus lessening wrinkling. This operation is known as fat transfer, fat injection, autologous fat transfer or fat grafting. In the face, it is used on the cheeks, the nasolabial folds, the jawline and the lower eye area.

The possibility of getting rid of deeply ingrained wrinkles, drooping skin and other undesirable manifestations without the need for incisions is higher when fat is transferred to your face. The process, known as lipofilling through which fat is absorbed and then transposed into your face using a special syringe is particularly relevant for people who have no desire to go through an operation.

The ideal outcome can be achieved with patients who are in the age bracket of 35 and 45 because at this age, a person does not have completely developed wrinkles. Patients that have skin that is not flexible are advised to consider a facelift operation as an aesthetic option.

Pre-Operation
  • Before undergoing the fat transfer procedure, consult your surgeon whether or not lipo-filling is suitable for you. To reduce the risk of complications, provide your doctor with a list of past and present health conditions, especially if they are related to hypertension, heart diseases, diabetes or allergic reactions to drugs.
  • Together with your surgeon, you will then determine the area from which the excessive fat is supposed to be removed.
  • Make sure not to take any anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or anticoagulants at least two weeks before the actual operation. The same goes for drugs containing glutamate, collagen and vitamin E2.
  • Some compounds with high vitamin E or diet compounds containing monosodium glutamate, garlic, onion and soybean may increase bleeding. Your doctor may advise you to avoid them for 3 to 5 days before the operation.
  • On the day of the operation, gently clean your face with warm water and avoid any makeup. To increase your comfort, you are allowed to bring a friend or relative into the operation room. Plan at least five to seven days away from work.
The Procedure

Fat infusions can be undertaken under local or IV sedation anesthesia. Thus, by using slim cannulas, fat is extracted from the inner or outer thigh, hip, lower back, or lower abdomen.

The fat is drained and then prepared using a specific machine that applies centrifugal force to separate the fat from the lymph. The fat is subsequently implanted into the appropriate facial area. The 0.5 centimeter incision is then sealed using stitches and small gauze or plaster is used to insulate it to aid in the healing process.

Medical Equipment by Tulips

The medical equipment used is from the Tulips brand is premium. Their equipment is one of the most preferred fat transfer and fat grafting instruments available today. The Tulips instruments have been designed with a blunt tip to ensure that they pass through soft tissue smoothly and comfortably without inflicting trauma or causing serious risks that are generally involved when sharp needles are used. This means that the instruments are very delicate to the fat cell so that the tissues will not get bruised and recovery will happen quickly. What this means is there is minimal; or no damage to fat cells and tissues. These single use kits are polished both externally and internally and this has immense benefits to the patients as well as the fat collected. Because the surface is polished, skin fraction and damage is minimal. The internal polished steel also ensures that there is minimal occurrence of blocking and fat drag because both can cause damage to the fat.

Post Operation
  • Around two weeks after the operation, a greater part of the distention will have vanished and you will have a general sense of what the final results will be. In the first few months, your body will soak up around 65% of the fat and 35% will remain but will be noticeable.
  • In less than 5 days, your sutures will be taken off. To reduce the swelling, you can use ice packs on the forehead and cheeks. Ensure that you follow all the instructions of your doctor and take your medication as prescribed. You should also go to your doctor the moment you have any allergic reactions and specifically rushes, itchiness or nausea.
  • Do not smoke or take alcohol for no less than 2 weeks after the operation to accelerate the restorative process.
  • Cut down on activities during the first week and stay away from skin creams and lotions for at least 24 hours.
