Types of Breast Implants
Breast implants can be filled with either silicone or saline. Both implants are considered safe for breast augmentation and breast reconstruction. Your surgeon might recommend one type over another based on a number of factors including the anatomy of your breasts and your body type. Ultimately, the final choice is always yours.
Silicone Gel-Filled Implants
These implants consist of a silicone outer shell and a gel-based filler. Silicone implants are stronger and have a more natural feel than saline-filled implants.
There are two types of silicone gel-filled implants:
A) “Silicone Gel Implants”
These implants are filled with a cohesive gel that maintains its shape in all positions and doesn’t leak. They are also light and soft to touch with a very natural feel. Silicone gel implants cost more than saline ones, but they also tend to last slightly longer.
B) “Gummy Bear Implants”
These are teardrop-shaped gel-based implants, also known as highly cohesive gel implants. They are known to retain their shape better than other types while still being soft to touch. Due to their strength, they are less likely to rupture than other silicone or saline-based implants.
Different Shapes and Sizes of Implants
Different shapes and sizes of implants are available.
1. Shapes
Round Implant
Due to the different sizes and heights of the pads, these types of implants are round and flat at the base. They usually don’t look natural as the pad doesn’t slide on the side when someone lies down
Anatomical Implant
The pad on implants with this kind of shape has a sandy matte texture that helps the pad not to move because it needs to stick with the tissue that is inside the breast. The operation of this kind of shape is usually a bit more complicated than the round implant procedure as it requires the surgeon to shape and size the breast after implantation correctly.

2. Size
Emphasis is usually on the brand of the implant, but they usually measure between 100cc-800cc.
Types of Surfaces of Implant Shells
1. Textured Implant
These implants are thick in nature and were designed to decrease the occurrence of a condition known as Capsular Contracture where scar tissues form around the breast implants. They roll down smoothly and do not move as much as the smooth-surfaced implants.
2. Smooth Surfaced Implant
They are thinner and softer, unlike their textured counterparts. They tend to go around the breast more. Chances of fascia creation around the breast are usually evident with these types of surfaces.
3. Micro-Textured Implants
These implants also have a very smooth surface, but they provide a superior shape, lift and feel to the smooth-surfaced implants. They also have lower rates of capsular contracture (this occurs when the scar tissue that normally forms around the implant tightens and contracts around the implant).

A Comparison Between Smooth and Textured Surfaces
Textured surfaces implants are best for breast implantations that are placed under the breast tissue as they are highly vulnerable to contracture. Textured surfaces are designed to reduce Capsular Contracture. Smooth surface implants, however, are recommended for placements that will go under the muscle. Smooth surface implants also have a lower rate of rippling compared to the textured surface implants.
Breast Implant Manufacturers
At Interplast Clinic we only use the highest quality breast implants for patient safety and optimal results. The following brands are available:
Motiva
Motive offers a range of silicone gel-filled implants that can adapt to the breast shape for a more natural look and feel. Motiva is also the first implant in the world that comes with an optional microchip that helps monitor the implants. All materials used in the manufacture of Motiva implants are approved by both European and US (FDA) authorities. Motiva implants are available in two outer shell surfaces: VelvetSurface, which is micro-textured and Silk Surface, which is a nanotextured implant.
MENTOR®
One of the leading breast implant brands in the world, Mentor offers a wide range of silicone and saline implants for breast augmentation and reconstruction. The silicone implants are prefilled with a cohesive silicone gel that helps the implants retain a natural feel. The saline implants come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and profiles. They are inserted into the body without fluid and filled during surgery to the required size. The implant then seals itself. Mentor saline implants are available in two surface options – smooth and textured.
Mentor CPG™
Contour Profile Gel (CPG) breast implants are teardrop-shaped gummy bear implants manufactured by Mentor. They are filled with a highly cohesive gel and shaped to mimic the silhouette of a natural breast.
Sebbin
Sebbin offers a range of cohesive gel-filled silicone implants for breast augmentation and reconstruction. The implants, which can be textured or nanotextured, come in various shapes, sizes, and projections.
Fat Grafting
In addition to silicone implants, breast augmentation can also be performed by using autologous fat grafting. This involves extracting fat tissue from other parts of your body and injecting it into the breasts to make them bigger. Typical donor-sites used for fat grafting include the hips, the thighs, and the stomach.
For a moderate augmentation of the breast, approximately 100-200 ml of fat may be used per breast. If desired, the process can be repeated to increase the breast size later. Approximately 50-80% of the transferred fat will survive and remain permanently in the breast. The rest will be reabsorbed by the body. It usually takes about three months to see the final results of the operation.
Fat grafting may be a good option for women who want to avoid the risks of implants and/or desire moderate and natural breast enhancement.
Composite Breast Augmentation
Composite breast augmentation surgery is an advanced procedure combining breast implants and fat grafting. It is also known as hybrid breast augmentation.
Composite breast augmentation may be the ideal procedure if:
- You are looking for a more customized solution to breast implants
- Your breasts are very wide apart or unsymmetrical
- You have a very bony upper chest or thin skin tissue on breastbone
- You want to achieve maximum fullness in the upper breast while maintaining natural-looking results
Composite breast augmentation can be used to enhance breast size more than fat grafting alone and provides more localized contouring compared to just implants. The combination approach provides a safe and reliable method for breast augmentation that produces more natural, customizable results.
