As you grow old, you will notice some scowl lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet on your facial skin. These unattractive lines develop as a result of the aging muscles which lie beneath the skin. These furrows deepen and become worse with age.
Fortunately, you can reduce the impact of aging on your face by going for BTA (Botulinum toxin type A), which is a purified and sterilized bacterial extract. BTA will stop the excessive active contraction of your facial muscles, thus making them unable to cause the deep lines.
A BTA injection takes approximately 2 to 5 days for it to be effective in the area of the muscle. Fillers may also be required alongside Botox for deep lines. BTA has proven to remove and soften wrinkles quickly and is possibly the easiest approach in removing and softening the furrows.

How Botox works

OnabotulinumtoxinA is commonly injected into an individual in minimal concentrations. It prevents the nerve cell signals from reaching muscles thus making the muscles relax temporarily. Only a few and slight wrinkles appear when the muscles relax.

Medical and aesthetic botox uses

Botox is essential in:

  • Reducing the appearance of facial furrows and fine lines such as forehead lines, glabellas, crow’s feet, perioral folds, platysmas and bunny lines.
  • Minimizing excess sweating and body stench.
  • Minimizing the square shape appearance of a person’s face which occurs as a result of muscle contraction.

Dangers and side effects of botox

Although Botox has few side effects, it has been noted that approximately 1% of individuals who are injected with the bacterial extract develop antibodies against the toxin, leading to inefficiency in the following treatments.

Rarely, a person may develop a genetic predisposition that causes a mild, temporary and abnormal response to the medication.

BTA may cause the following adverse effects:

  • Slight pain, local edema and/or erythema on the area that has been injected.
  • Temporary numbness
  • Headache
  • Slight nausea
  • Transient and undesirable weakness of the surrounding musculature
  • Short-term drooping of the upper lid or brow
  • The lower eyelid or lateral rectus becomes weak
  • Weakness of the neck
  • Brachial plexopathy
  • Bleeding
  • Unclear vision
  • Dryness of the mouth
  • Extreme tiredness
  • urticaria
  • Rashes
  • whistling
  • Inflammation
Treatments given before BTA
  1. Preparation
  • Before the procedure, discuss any concerns with your health expert
  • Disclose and talk about allergies related to food, drugs, among others before the commencement of the procedure.
  • Inform your doctor about any medical condition that you are suffering from and the drugs that you are taking.
  • Clean your and rinse your face off any make make-up
  • Apply ice a few minutes prior to injection.
  1. Botox precaution

All lactating and mothers to be should not use Botox. Additionally, it shouldn’t be used on people who have an allergic history to the drug or any of its components.

BTA Procedure

  • Firstly, the doctor will ask you to contract the muscle of the part under treatment so as to inject properly. For the treatment of wrinkles between your eyes, you will need to frown.
  • You may be injected thrice per muscle, depending on the part under treatment.
  • While the toxin enters the muscle you will feel a needle prick which is followed by a slight stinging or burning lasting for few seconds.
  • You may be required to press a gauze pad lightly against the injected or/and hold it for several minutes.
  • Depending on the parts under treatment, the entire procedure can take 10-60 minutes.
  • You can resume your normal activities after the completion of the procedure.
The Procedure

Botulinum toxin takes 24 to 72 hours to be effective, and its effectiveness lasts for 4-6 months depending on an individual, concentration of the toxin and the tone of the muscle. Once BTA losses it effectiveness, the muscle contract gradually and wrinkles reappear without causing other problems.

Perform facial exercises 3 hours after BTA injection.

  • Avoid exposure to the sun.
  • Use cotton to cease bleeding.
  • Put and hold an ice pack against the treated part.
  • Don’t rub the treated part.
  • Don’t do any facial treatment four hours after botox injection.
  • Don’t lay down or bend until 4 hours after the procedure lapses (depending on your doctor’s advice).
  • Your doctor may need to follow up to assess the effectiveness of the treatment
